FORKED RIVER, NJ — Ocean County’s latest initiative to create accessible, inclusive playgrounds took a major step forward with the unveiling of a new all-inclusive playground at Eno’s Pond County Park. The ribbon-cutting ceremony, held on June 26, marked the completion of the fully accessible play area, which is designed to accommodate children of all abilities.

The event was attended by Ocean County Commissioner Robert S. Arace, Chairman of the Ocean County Department of Parks and Recreation, along with several local officials, including Ocean County Commissioner Jennifer Bacchione, Lacey Township Mayor Peter Curatolo, and Lacey Township Committeewoman Peggy Sue Juliano. Also present were Ocean County Administrator Michael J. Fiure and Mary Jane Bavais, Director of the Ocean County Department of Parks and Recreation.

“The playground we are unveiling today is part of a growing initiative across our park system to build all-inclusive play spaces,” said Arace during the ceremony. “It is thoughtfully designed for children of all abilities to learn, play and grow together.”

State funding backs project

Ocean County secured funding for the project through a grant from the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection’s Jakes Law Grant. Jake’s Law, passed in 2018, encourages the development of inclusive playgrounds that go beyond the requirements of the Americans with Disabilities Act, ensuring accessibility for those with physical or sensory impairments.

The new playground at Eno’s Pond features a variety of accessible equipment, including swings designed for both children and parents, a slide, and a sensory area. The play surface, made of pour-in-play rubber, ensures a safe, smooth environment for children who use wheelchairs or require mobility assistance. These upgrades provide children with disabilities an equal opportunity to engage in recreational activities alongside their peers.

Inclusive design for all abilities

“This new all-inclusive playground is a commitment to creating welcoming and supportive environments for every family,” Arace said. “We are proud to feature it here at Eno’s Pond County Park, and we hope it will become a destination playground for generations to come.”

The playground is part of a larger initiative by the county to enhance its parks and provide all children, regardless of ability, the opportunity to play and interact in a safe, supportive environment. The installation of such spaces is expected to set a new standard for inclusive design in local parks.

With its diverse offerings and innovative features, the playground at Eno’s Pond aims to foster community connections and provide a recreational space where children and families of all kinds can enjoy the outdoors together.

As the first of many inclusive playgrounds planned for the area, the Eno’s Pond park marks a significant milestone in Ocean County’s commitment to accessibility and inclusivity.

The new park promises to be a lasting asset for families in the region, providing a space where children can play freely and safely, regardless of their physical abilities.
