Man killed on Route 9 Edison Bridge while repairing disabled truck

A truck driver was fatally struck on Route 9 early Wednesday while attempting roadside repairs on the Edison Bridge.

SAYREVILLE, N.J. — Authorities are investigating a fatal crash that occurred early Wednesday morning on the northbound side of the Edison Bridge on Route 9, resulting in the death of a Jersey City man.

Jamal Ebron, 53, was outside his disabled tractor trailer attempting repairs when he was struck by a Hyundai Kona at approximately 4:51 a.m., according to Middlesex County Prosecutor Yolanda Ciccone and Sayreville Police Chief Daniel Plumacker.

The Hyundai, driven by a 33-year-old man from Old Bridge, hit Ebron while he was in the right lane. Emergency responders pronounced Ebron dead at the scene. The driver of the Hyundai was transported to Raritan Bay Medical Center and is currently receiving treatment for his injuries.

An initial investigation by Officer Nicholas Kales of the Sayreville Police Department and Detective Ken McGarry of the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office confirmed that Ebron had exited his vehicle to conduct repairs when he was struck.

The Edison Bridge remained partially closed during the morning commute while authorities processed the scene and cleared the roadway.

Investigation ongoing, authorities seek public assistance

The investigation remains active as officials work to determine all contributing factors in the collision. Authorities have not indicated whether charges are being considered.
