Hackensack police pursuit of fleeing juvenile leads to injuries, investigation ongoing

HACKENSACK, N.J. — A juvenile fleeing police in response to a reported dispute at a 7-Eleven on Essex Street was apprehended Sunday evening after suffering minor injuries while attempting to climb a fence, authorities said.

Hackensack police were dispatched to the convenience store on December 8 in response to a dispute that potentially involved a weapon. Officers were provided with a description of the suspect and began searching the area.

An individual matching the suspect’s description was located but fled when officers attempted to stop him. During the pursuit, the juvenile attempted to climb a fence, became stuck, and sustained minor injuries. Officers assisted in freeing him from the fence and placed him into custody, offering medical attention, which he declined. One officer also sustained injuries during the chase.

Upon further investigation, police determined the individual was not connected to the 7-Eleven incident. The juvenile was subsequently released to the custody of a family member. The reasons for his flight remain unclear, and the matter is now under review.

Hackensack officials confirmed that the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office will review the incident, and body-worn camera footage will be used as part of the investigation. Due to the individual’s age and the ongoing nature of the case, no further details were provided.

Police continue their investigation after a juvenile fleeing custody in Hackensack was mistakenly linked to a 7-Eleven incident.
